Many of our customers have mentioned how much cooking means to them, but wish to avoid glues and other finishes commonly used in constructing cutting boards. Now, we finally have an option for a glueless, food safe cutting board with this large maple cutting board by Urthware.

Hand crafted in small batches, each board is cut from a single piece of premium Canadian maple wood. Stainless steel rods are then carefully positioned into the wood, which help prevent the cutting board from warping. Naturally resistant to bacteria, maple is an ideal choice for woods in the kitchen.

Please do not wash these boards in the dishwasher - only wash by hand as they need to be treated with care more than a typical board. We recommend oiling with coconut oil such as our Bartow and Sons board tonic.

Why are rods necessary and can I get the board without them?

The stainless steel rods are necessary because without them, the wood would wrap and bow after being exposed to water. Wood is very similar to a dried sponge - it has many air pockets and chambers in the wood fibers. When soaked in water, it will expand, then dry when it contracts. Over time, this will cause the wood to curve and bend, until it becomes wobbly on your kitchen counter. With glued boards, this doesn't happen as much, because the glue helps to keep the wood from warping. Since this cutting board is made without the use of glues, it is necessary to use the rods to stop the wood from warping.

Does the finish contain any mineral oils or petroleum by products?
